The Hunchback’s Tale

In the vibrant, bustling heart of an ancient city, where the scent of spices mingled with the heavy heat of the afternoon, lived a cheerful tailor and his beautiful wife. They were known throughout the neighborhood for their hospitality and love for music. One evening, while sitting at their doorstep, a hunchback approached them. He was a merry fellow, playing a tambourine and singing songs that could make even the weary heart dance. Delighted by his spirit, the tailor invited him to dinner.

However, what was meant to be a night of laughter soon turned into a nightmare. As they sat down to a feast of fish, the hunchback swallowed a large bone that stuck in his throat. In an instant, his laughter stopped, and he fell to the ground, seemingly lifeless. Panicked and fearing the Sultan’s law regarding the death of a guest, the tailor and his wife decided to seek help. They carried him to the house of a Jewish physician, hoping for a miracle.

A Chain of Accidental Crimes

In their haste, they left the hunchback on the stairs of the doctor’s house. When the physician came out in the dark, he accidentally kicked the body, causing it to tumble down the stairs. Believing he had killed the man, the terrified doctor sought to pass the burden along. It was a night of chaos that felt as surreal as a journey on The Magic Carpet, where one is whisked away into the unknown without warning.

The doctor managed to move the body to the house of a purveyor to the Sultan. The purveyor, returning home and finding a stranger in his kitchen, struck the body with a club, thinking it was a thief. When he realized the man was already dead, he feared for his life. Feeling as sightless and lost as The Blind Baba Abdalla wandering the desert, he carried the hunchback to a corner near the market and leaned him against a wall.

The Trial Before the Sultan

By dawn, a wealthy merchant passed by and, thinking the hunchback was mocking him, struck him a blow. A watchman nearby immediately arrested the merchant for murder. The news spread like wildfire through the city. Just as in The Story of Sidi Nouman, where hidden secrets eventually come to light through magical or mundane means, the truth of that night began to unravel in the most unexpected way.

Before the Sultan, the merchant pleaded his innocence, but the evidence was against him. Just as the executioner raised his sword, the purveyor stepped forward, unable to bear the guilt. Then the doctor stepped forward, and finally, the tailor. Each confessed to the ‘killing’ of the hunchback, creating a puzzle that baffled the Sultan’s court. One might wonder if even the humble Cogia Hassan Alhabbal would have found the wisdom to navigate such a tangled web of fate and misfortune.

The Barber’s Intervention

The Sultan, amused yet intrigued by these conflicting confessions, called for a barber to examine the body. This barber, known for his talkative nature but also his keen skill, noticed something the others had missed. With a sharp pair of tweezers and a steady hand, he reached into the hunchback’s throat and pulled out the fishbone. To the astonishment of everyone, the hunchback suddenly gasped, opened his eyes, and sneezed. He was alive!

The Sultan burst into laughter, realizing that none of the men were murderers, but rather victims of their own fear. He rewarded the barber and pardoned the four men. The assembly marveled at the story, finding it as strange and captivating as the legendary encounter between The First Old Man and Gazelle. The hunchback’s tale became a reminder that things are rarely as they first appear, and that the threads of destiny are woven in ways we can hardly imagine.
