The Bird and the Monkey, Panchatantra Story with Moral

The Bird and the Monkey
A modern retelling of the classic Panchatantra fable “The Bird and the Monkey.” Discover a timeless cautionary tale. It explains why offering unsolicited advice to a stubborn fool can quickly bring your own house crashing down.

The Bird and the Monkey: Deep within a sprawling forest stood a massive, ancient banyan tree. Its thick canopy was ideal for birds. The flock had spent weeks carefully weaving beautiful, snug nests out of twigs and dry grass. Inside their sturdy little homes, the birds were perfectly safe from the elements.

The Bird and the Monkey

One afternoon, the season took a bitter turn. A severe winter storm rolled in, bringing freezing winds and a relentless, icy rain.

As the storm raged, a troop of monkeys came running through the forest, desperately looking for shelter. They were soaked to the bone and shivering. They were completely miserable. They huddled together at the base of the banyan tree. They tried in vain to escape the biting cold.

High above, one of the birds peeked out from the warmth of his dry nest. Seeing the shivering monkeys below, he felt a mix of pity and confusion. Leaning over his branch, he called out over the sound of the rain.

“Friends!” the bird chirped. “You have hands and feet that look exactly like a human’s. You are so big, strong, and capable. We birds only have our tiny beaks, yet we managed to build these warm, sturdy nests to protect ourselves. Why don’t you use your incredible strength? Build a proper home. Then you don’t have to suffer in the rain.”

The bird thought he was offering helpful, logical advice. The monkeys, however, saw it very differently.

Already freezing, wet, and in a terrible mood, the monkeys were deeply insulted. A tiny, fragile bird looked down from its cozy home. The bird’s lecturing felt like a massive slap in the face.

“Listen to this arrogant little creature!” the leader of the monkeys snarled, his teeth chattering with rage. “He sits up there, perfectly comfortable, mocking us and acting like some great, wise philosopher! Let’s see how much of a genius he is without his precious little house.”

The monkey, driven by spite and a bruised ego, furiously ignored the freezing rain. He scrambled straight up the trunk of the massive tree. Before the terrified bird could even react, the monkey reached the branch, grabbed the beautifully woven nest in his hands, and violently tore it to pieces.

He gave a cruel laugh and scattered the twigs into the wind. This left the poor bird completely homeless and exposed to the freezing storm.

The Moral: Never waste your wisdom on a fool. Unsolicited advice is rarely appreciated. Trying to guide someone who is arrogant and angry will only invite their wrath upon yourself.
