In the grand tapestry of the Arabian Nights, few figures command as much respect and intrigue as Zubaidah, the beloved wife of the Caliph Harun al-Rashid. Her narrative is not just one of royalty, but a profound exploration of virtue, trial, and the supernatural forces that govern the world of Alif Laila. The Story of Zubaidah begins in the bustling markets and shimmering palaces of Baghdad, yet it quickly transports us to mysterious lands across the sea.
The Journey Begins
Zubaidah was known throughout the land for her wisdom and her unwavering faith. Unlike the tales of greed seen in The Blind Baba Abdalla, where a man’s obsession with wealth led to his physical and spiritual blindness, Zubaidah’s heart remained focused on charity and justice. One day, she decided to set out on a commercial voyage, accompanied by her two elder sisters.
During the voyage, a great storm arose, drifting their ship into uncharted waters. When the winds finally calmed, they found themselves near an island featuring a magnificent city. However, a strange silence hung over the streets. As they explored, they were horrified to find that every living creature—from the king on his throne to the beggars in the alleys—had been turned into black stone. This eerie transformation mirrors the dark magic often encountered in the chronicles of the Arabian Nights, similar to the mysterious enchantments found in The Story of Sidi Nouman, where the line between the human and the monstrous is often blurred.
The Young Prince and the Sacred Vow
While wandering through the petrified palace, Zubaidah discovered a single living soul: a young prince. He explained that his people had been cursed by the Almighty because they worshipped fire and refused to acknowledge the true Creator. He alone had been spared because he had secretly studied the holy scriptures. This theme of divine intervention and the consequences of one’s actions is a recurring motif in Alif Laila, much like the lessons of fate and fortune explored in the life of Cogia Hassan Alhabbal, who rose from poverty through destiny’s hand.
Zubaidah, moved by the prince’s story and his devotion, decided to take him back to Baghdad. She felt a deep connection to his plight, recognizing that his survival was a testament to the power of faith against the tides of magic.
Betrayal and the Two Black Bitches
As they sailed homeward, the green-eyed monster of jealousy took hold of Zubaidah’s sisters. They could not bear to see Zubaidah return with such a noble prince and the treasures of the stone city. In the dark of night, they conspired to throw Zubaidah and the prince into the sea. While the prince perished in the waves, Zubaidah managed to swim to a nearby island.
This act of sibling betrayal is a haunting echo of the stories told by the travelers in other tales, specifically the tragedy within The Second Old Man and Dogs, where envy drives brothers to commit unspeakable acts. On the island, Zubaidah encountered a fairy in the form of a serpent whom she had previously saved. To reward her kindness and punish the wicked, the fairy transformed Zubaidah’s sisters into two black dogs.
The Caliph’s Discovery
Years later, when Harun al-Rashid encountered Zubaidah, he was puzzled to see her treating two black dogs with both discipline and deep sorrow. It was here that she recounted her journey, explaining that she was bound by the fairy’s command to whip the dogs daily to atone for their sins, yet she wept for the sisters they once were. This duality of punishment and mercy is central to the moral fabric of these legends, much like the magical transformation and eventual redemption seen in The First Old Man and Gazelle.
Zubaidah’s story eventually reached the ears of the Caliph, who sought the fairy’s intervention. Touched by Zubaidah’s unwavering spirit and her willingness to forgive those who had wronged her, the fairy eventually restored the sisters to their human forms. The Story of Zubaidah serves as a powerful reminder that while magic can transform the body, only virtue and faith can preserve the soul.
