In the heart of the ancient and legendary lands often spoken of in the chronicles of Alif Laila, there lived a King named Shahzaman. He ruled over the Islands of Khaledan with wisdom and grace, yet his heart remained heavy. For many years, he was childless, until finally, the heavens blessed him with a son whom he named Prince Kamar al-Zaman, the ‘Moon of the Age.’ As the boy grew, his beauty became the talk of the kingdom, surpassing even the most vivid descriptions found in The Hunchback’s Tale.
Prince Kamar was not just handsome; he was also brilliant and skilled in every art. However, as he reached the age of adulthood, he developed a peculiar disdain for marriage. He believed that the world of women was filled with complications and that his freedom was far more valuable than a crown shared with a queen. King Shahzaman, fearing for his lineage, pleaded with his son, but Kamar remained as stubborn as any character in the mystical narratives of The Magic Carpet, refusing to yield even when the weight of the throne pressed upon him.
The Prince’s Rebellion and the Tower
Angered by his son’s defiance, King Shahzaman eventually ordered Prince Kamar to be imprisoned in an old, isolated tower on the outskirts of the city. He hoped that solitude would bring the young man to his senses. Little did the King know that this tower was not as empty as it seemed. Deep within its ancient stones lived a female Djinn named Maimunah.
One night, as Kamar lay sleeping, Maimunah observed the Prince and was struck by his celestial beauty. She flew into the night sky, where she encountered a rival Djinn named Danhasch. They began to argue about whose mortal protege was more beautiful. Danhasch claimed that in the far-off land of China, there lived a Princess named Badoura who was the most exquisite creature on Earth. Their debate grew fierce, reminding one of the spiritual conflicts found in the life of The Blind Baba Abdalla.
A Night of Supernatural Wonders
To settle their dispute, the two djinns decided to bring Princess Badoura to the tower where Prince Kamar lay. In the blink of an eye, the sleeping Princess was transported across thousands of miles. They placed her beside the Prince. When the djinns woke Kamar, he gazed upon Badoura and was instantly captivated by her radiant face. He believed he was dreaming, much like the enchanted transformations seen in The Story of Sidi Nouman. He took a ring from her finger and replaced it with his own before falling back into a magical slumber.
When the djinns woke Badoura, she too saw the handsome Prince and felt a love so profound it seemed written in the stars. Like the unexpected fortunes found in the tale of Cogia Hassan Alhabbal, she felt her life change in an instant. However, the djinns soon transported her back to her father’s palace in China, leaving both royals to wake up the next morning in their respective homes, heart-sick and confused, holding only a ring as proof of their encounter.
The Quest for the Beloved
Both the Prince and the Princess were thought to have gone mad. They refused food and spoke only of the mysterious stranger they had met in the night. It was only through the cleverness of Marzavan, the Princess’s foster brother, that the truth began to emerge. He traveled across the world, following whispers of a Prince who had lost his mind for love, until he finally reached the kingdom of Khaledan.
After many trials and journeys through deserts and over seas, Marzavan managed to bring Prince Kamar to the Princess. Their reunion was nothing short of miraculous, proving that even the most stubborn hearts can be softened by the hand of fate. They were eventually married in a grand ceremony that eclipsed all others, uniting two great kingdoms and bringing peace to the islands of Khaledan and the empires of China.
Their story serves as a reminder that destiny cannot be avoided, and true love, once sparked, will cross oceans and mountains to find its home. Their legacy lives on in the annals of Arabian mythology, standing tall among the greatest legends of history.
