The Enchanted Horse

The Enchanted Horse
Journey into the skies with The Enchanted Horse. A timeless Alif Laila story of a mechanical marvel, a brave prince, and an epic rescue mission.

In the ancient, glittering city of Shiraz, during the vibrant celebrations of the New Year, the air was filled with the scent of spices and the sound of music. This was a time when the world seemed woven from the very fabric of wonder, much like the legendary tales shared between Shahryar and Scheherazade. On this particular day, a mysterious sage from India arrived at the palace of the King of Persia, leading a horse that appeared to be carved from the finest ebony.

While it lacked the breath of life, the sage claimed it possessed a power far greater than any beast of flesh and blood. This was the Enchanted Horse, a mechanical marvel capable of traversing the globe in the blink of an eye. The court was skeptical, for they had heard many strange fables, including The Tale of King Yunan, where magic and medicine often blurred the lines of reality. To prove his claim, the sage invited the King’s son, Prince Firouz Schah, to mount the steed.

The Prince’s Flight into the Unknown

With a simple turn of a hidden peg behind the horse’s ear, the Prince found himself soaring into the azure sky. The palace shrunk to the size of a toy, and the vast deserts of Persia unfolded beneath him. This sense of isolation and discovery was not unlike the feelings described in Sindbad The 2nd Voyage, where the hero finds himself in a land of giants and jewels. The Prince, exhilarated by the wind and the speed, soon realized he did not know how to land. After hours of frantic searching, he discovered a second peg that allowed the horse to descend.

He landed on the roof of a magnificent palace in the kingdom of Bengal. There, under the silver glow of the moon, he met a princess whose beauty surpassed any description. They spent the night talking, and the Prince quickly fell in love. However, their peace was short-lived. The King of Bengal was not pleased to find a stranger in his daughter’s chambers. Using his wit, the Prince escaped back to Persia on his horse, but not before promising the Princess that he would return to claim her hand.

Betrayal and the Sage’s Revenge

True to his word, Firouz Schah returned and brought the Princess back to the outskirts of his father’s capital. Leaving her in a secluded garden, he went to prepare a royal welcome. However, the Indian sage, feeling insulted by the King’s earlier treatment, found the Princess first. He deceived her, mounted the horse with her, and vanished into the clouds. The Prince’s heart broke; he felt as though he were trapped in a tragedy as dark as The Three Apples, where a beautiful woman’s fate is sealed by cruelty and misunderstanding.

The sage took the Princess to the kingdom of Kashmir, where he hoped to keep her for himself. But the Sultan of Kashmir, hearing the commotion of a flying horse, intervened. He imprisoned the sage and took the Princess to his palace, intending to marry her. To protect herself, the Princess feigned madness, a desperate ruse to buy time for her true love to find her.

The Great Rescue and Restoration

Meanwhile, Prince Firouz Schah had traveled across many lands, disguised as a dervish. His journey was fraught with peril, reminding one of the treacherous encounters in Sindbad: The 3rd Voyage. He finally reached Kashmir and heard rumors of a beautiful foreign princess who had lost her mind. Realizing it was his beloved, he disguised himself as a learned physician.

He gained access to the palace and whispered his identity to the Princess. Together, they hatched a plan. The Prince told the Sultan that the Princess was possessed by the magic of the Enchanted Horse and that both must be brought to the public square for a cleansing ritual. As the crowds gathered, the Prince mounted the horse with the Princess, turned the secret peg, and vanished into the sky before the Sultan’s eyes.

They returned to Persia in triumph, where the King welcomed them with open arms. The Enchanted Horse was destroyed to prevent further mischief, and the Prince and Princess lived a life of joy, their story becoming a beacon of hope in the vast collection of Alif Laila.
