The Old Man Young Wife and Thief: In the ancient lands, wisdom was shared through the voices of animals. It was also shared through the experiences of men. There lived an elderly merchant of immense wealth. Despite his riches, his heart yearned for a companionship that gold could not buy. He eventually married a woman who was much younger than himself.

This marriage mirrored the grandeur seen in The Wedding Of The Mice. However, although the merchant was enamored by her beauty, the young woman was cold. She remained distant because she had been married off against her true desires. She found no joy in her husband’s presence. She avoided his touch. Her actions left the old man in a state of perpetual loneliness within his own palace.

Months passed, and the merchant tried every possible way to win her affection. He brought her jewels that shimmered like the moon and silks as soft as clouds. Yet, her heart remained as impenetrable as the logic in The Cave That Talked. Every night, she turned her back to him. This created a silent wall between them. No amount of wealth could tear it down. The merchant often felt like a character in The Tale of Two Snakes. He felt trapped in a destiny that seemed both fortunate and cursed.

He vanished into the night. The merchant was left to enjoy the moment he had waited for so long.

This Panchtantra classic teaches us that sometimes, external threats or unexpected catalysts can bridge gaps that logic and kindness cannot. The merchant had wisdom in his ability to see the silver lining in a dangerous situation. He turned a moment of fear into a milestone for his relationship.
