The Story Of The Blue Jackal: Deep within the heart of a vibrant forest lived a jackal named Chandaraka. Like most of his kind, he was lean, clever, and always on the lookout for an easy meal. However, life in the wilderness wasn’t always kind. One particularly harsh winter, food became scarce, and the forest grew silent. Hungry and desperate, Chandaraka decided to venture toward the nearby human settlement, hoping to scavenge some leftovers. He had no idea this journey would transform him. It would mirror the intricate social dynamics found in the tale of The Lion, Camel, Jackal And Crow.
A Stroke of Blue Luck
As Chandaraka entered the village under the veil of darkness, he was immediately spotted by a pack of ferocious local dogs. They barked and lunged at him, forcing the terrified jackal to run for his life. In his frantic attempt to escape, he leaped over a wall and landed with a massive splash into a large vat of indigo dye outside a dyer’s house. He stayed submerged until the dogs lost his scent and moved on.
When he finally climbed out of the vat, he was shocked to see his reflection in a puddle. He was no longer a dusty brown; he was a brilliant, shimmering blue. He realized that this was his chance to reinvent himself. The forces of nature are unpredictable. The story of The Bird Pair and the Sea shows this. Chandaraka decided to use this strange accident to his advantage.
The King of the Forest
The jackal returned to the forest. He noticed that all the animals fled in terror at the sight of him. This included both the smallest rabbit and the largest elephant. They had never seen a creature of such a divine, azure hue. Seizing the moment, Chandaraka stood atop a high rock and announced, “Do not fear! I have been sent by Lord Brahma himself. He saw that the forest had no leader and has anointed me as your king to protect you all.”
The animals, including the mighty lions and tigers, bowed down in reverence. They wanted to avoid making a fatal mistake. The protagonist in The Turtle that fell off the Stick lost everything because of a single lapse in judgment. Chandaraka was crowned the king of the jungle. He lived a life of luxury, with other animals hunting for him and bringing him the finest meats.
The Deceptive Rule
As a king, Chandaraka was cunning. He knew that if he allowed other jackals near him, they might recognize him. He banished all the jackals from his court, preferring the company of lions and panthers. This hubris is a common theme in Panchtantra. It is often compared to the wisdom found in the Tale of the Three Fishes. In this tale, foresight determines survival. For a while, the blue jackal lived like a god among mortals.
However, power based on lies is a fragile thing. Even the smallest creatures can bring down a giant if they work together. This lesson is beautifully illustrated in the story of The Elephant and the Sparrow. Chandaraka’s reign was prosperous for him, but he was constantly living in fear of being exposed. He enforced a strict hierarchy. This was similar to the one explored in The Lion and the Jackal. This ensured no one got close enough to see the dye on his fur.
The Call of Nature
One evening, the blue jackal sat on his throne. He was surrounded by his subjects. A pack of jackals began to howl in the distance. The sound was haunting and familiar. It was the ancestral call of his brothers, a sound that stirred something deep within Chandaraka’s soul. He forgot his royal persona and the blue dye that covered his skin. Pure instinct took over. He raised his head toward the moon. Then he let out a long, piercing howl: “Awoo-awoo-awoooo!”
The lions and tigers froze. They looked at the blue ‘god’ and then at each other. The truth was out. The divine messenger was nothing more than a common jackal. He had fallen into a tub of paint. Enraged by the deception, the animals pounced on him. Chandaraka’s reign ended as quickly as it had begun.
The Moral of the Story
The Story Of The Blue Jackal teaches us an important lesson. No matter how much one tries to change their outward appearance, their true identity will come out. Natural instincts and character will eventually reveal themselves. Deception might provide temporary success, but honesty and authenticity are the only paths to lasting respect.
