Birthday Gift

The rain tapped a gentle, rhythmic lullaby against the windowpane of the cozy, third-floor apartment. Inside, the warm glow of fairy lights danced across the wooden floorboards, casting soft shadows on the walls. The sweet, comforting aroma of baked cinnamon and vanilla filled the air, mingling with the earthy scent of the rain outside.

Kabir stood by the kitchen counter, nervously adjusting his collar. He checked his watch for the tenth time in five minutes. It was 7:45 PM. Ira would be home any moment. Tonight was her twenty-fifth birthday, and Kabir felt a familiar, tightening knot of anxiety in his chest.

He wanted this night to be perfect. More than that, he wanted his gift to be perfect.

Kabir was an aspiring writer and illustrator, a man who lived in the realm of imagination and ink. Ira, on the other hand, was a pragmatic software engineer whose structured world kept Kabir grounded. Despite their differences, they fit together like two halves of a puzzle. But lately, Kabir’s freelance projects had been slow, and his bank account was precariously low. Just a month ago, he had seen Ira gazing longingly at a beautiful, classic leather-bound journal and an elegant fountain pen set in a boutique shop window. He had desperately wanted to buy it for her, but his budget simply wouldn’t allow it.

Instead, he had spent the last three weeks working secretly late into the night on an alternative. Now, looking at the modestly wrapped parcel on the coffee table, he wondered if it was enough. Would she be disappointed?

The Arrival

The sound of a key turning in the lock broke his train of thought. The door swung open, and Ira stepped inside, shaking her wet umbrella. Her dark hair was slightly damp, and her cheeks were flushed pink from the chilly autumn wind. Despite looking exhausted from a long day at work, her eyes lit up the moment she saw the decorated living room.

‘Happy Birthday, Ira!’ Kabir said, stepping forward with a warm smile.

Ira let out a soft laugh, dropping her bag and wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. ‘Oh, Kabir! You did all this? It looks absolutely beautiful.’

‘Only the best for the birthday girl,’ he murmured, kissing the top of her head. ‘Go wash up. Dinner is ready.’

He had prepared her favorite meal—a simple but delicious garlic butter pasta and a fresh garden salad, topped off with a small chocolate cake he had baked himself. As they sat across from each other at the small dining table, sharing stories of their week and laughing over old memories, Kabir’s anxiety began to melt away. Ira’s laughter was his favorite sound in the world, a melody that could instantly soothe his restless mind.

Unwrapping Memories

After dinner, Kabir led Ira to the couch and handed her a mug of hot cocoa. He then reached for the paper-wrapped package on the table and placed it gently in her lap.

‘It’s not much,’ Kabir admitted, his voice dropping to a soft whisper. ‘I know you liked that fountain pen set, and I really wanted to get it for you, but…’

Ira silenced him by placing a warm hand over his. ‘Kabir, you know I don’t care about expensive things. Your presence is my favorite present.’

‘Just open it,’ he smiled shyly.

Ira carefully untied the simple jute string and peeled back the brown wrapping paper. Inside was a thick, handmade scrapbook with a wooden cover. On the front, Kabir had meticulously carved their initials, ‘K & I’, surrounded by a delicate border of engraved ivy leaves.

As Ira opened the first page, her breath hitched.

It wasn’t just a photo album; it was an illustrated timeline of their love story. On the first page, Kabir had sketched the quaint, rainy coffee shop where they had met by pure chance three years ago. Next to the sketch, he had pasted the faded, original receipt from that day, where he had bought her a chamomile tea because the shop had run out of her favorite matcha latte.

A Journey Through Time

With every turn of the page, Ira’s eyes grew wider. There were dried flower petals from the first bouquet he had ever given her, ticket stubs from the terrible indie movie they had walked out of halfway through, and tiny watercolor paintings of the places they had visited together.

Alongside the sketches and mementos, Kabir had written short, poetic descriptions of his feelings during those moments. On a page featuring a sketch of them sitting on a park bench under a starry sky, his neat handwriting read: ‘This was the night I realized that home wasn’t a place, but a person. It was you.’

By the time Ira reached the final page, tears were sparkling in her eyes. The last page featured a beautiful, detailed pencil portrait of Ira herself, smiling warmly, capturing the exact expression of pure joy she wore whenever she looked at him.

Opposite the portrait was a small envelope. Inside was a hand-written letter. It didn’t contain grand promises of wealth or luxury, but a simple, heartfelt vow to always stand by her, to listen to her dreams, and to fill her life with as much love and creativity as he possibly could.

The Ultimate Gift

Ira closed the book gently, her hands trembling slightly. She looked up at Kabir, the tears finally spilling over her lashes.

‘Do you like it?’ Kabir asked, suddenly feeling vulnerable.

In response, Ira threw her arms around his neck, pulling him into a deep, passionate embrace. She held him tightly, as if she would never let go.

‘I don’t like it, Kabir,’ she whispered against his neck, her voice thick with emotion. ‘I absolutely love it. This is the most beautiful, thoughtful, and precious gift I have ever received in my entire life. No store-bought item could ever compare to this.’

Kabir wrapped his arms around her, a profound sense of relief and happiness washing over him. In a world that often measures affection by the price tag of a gift, he realized that the most valuable thing he could ever offer was his heart, his time, and his memories.

As the rain continued to pour outside, the small apartment felt warmer than ever. They sat together on the couch, flipping through the pages of their story once more, ready to write the next chapter together.
