The Little Hunchback

The Little Hunchback
Explore the hilarious and suspenseful story of The Little Hunchback. A classic Alif Laila masterpiece featuring twists, dark comedy, and a surprising end.

In the heart of a vibrant kingdom, where the air was always thick with the scent of spices and the hum of trade, lived a tailor and his beautiful wife. They were known for their hospitality and cheerful nature. One evening, while sitting at their shop door, they encountered a little hunchback who played a lute and sang songs so beautifully that they were instantly charmed. They invited him home for dinner, unaware that this simple act of kindness would lead to a night of absolute chaos and dark comedy, much like the legendary adventures found in Aladdin And The Magic Lamp.

An Unfortunate Feast- The Little Hunchback

The tailor’s wife prepared a delicious meal of fish. As they sat down to eat, the hunchback, in his excitement, swallowed a large bone that got stuck in his throat. Within moments, he turned pale and stopped breathing. The couple was terrified; they feared being accused of murder if a guest was found dead in their home. They decided to hide the body and seek help under the guise of an emergency.

They carried the hunchback to the house of a Jewish doctor. Leaving a piece of silver with the servant, they told her to fetch the doctor quickly because their friend was ill. In the darkness of the staircase, they propped the body up against the wall and fled. When the doctor came rushing down, he accidentally bumped into the hunchback, causing the body to tumble down the stairs. Seeing the lifeless form at the bottom, the doctor cried, “By my soul, I have killed a patient!”

The Chain of Panic

Fearing the law, the doctor and his wife decided to pass the burden along. They carried the hunchback to the roof of a neighboring house belonging to the Sultan’s steward. They lowered the body down the chimney and left it standing in the kitchen. When the steward returned and saw a shadow in the dark, he thought it was a thief—the kind of rogue often mentioned in the stories of Ali Baba And The Forty Thieve. He struck the hunchback with a heavy stick, only to realize the man was already dead.

Terrified of being hung for murder, the steward carried the body to a dark alley and leaned it against a shop. Soon, a wealthy merchant, who was walking home late, saw the hunchback. Thinking the man was trying to rob him, the merchant struck him. A guard passing by saw the altercation and arrested the merchant, believing he had just killed a man in cold blood.

The King’s Justice

The merchant was brought before the judge and sentenced to death. Just as the executioner was about to perform his duty, the steward rushed forward, confessing that he was the true killer. Then the doctor stepped forward, claiming the guilt was his. Finally, the tailor arrived, explaining how the night had truly begun. The confusion was so great that the Sultan himself was summoned to hear the extraordinary tale.

The Sultan was amazed by the sequence of events. He called for his most skilled surgeons to examine the body. As the lead surgeon looked into the hunchback’s throat, he noticed the fishbone still lodged there. With a quick movement of his forceps, he removed the bone. To everyone’s absolute shock, the hunchback let out a giant sneeze, opened his eyes, and sat up as if he had just woken from a long nap.

A Lesson in Fate

The Sultan laughed heartily at the absurdity of the night’s events. He realized that none of the men were murderers; they were simply victims of a strange and comical fate. He ordered a grand feast to be held in honor of the hunchback’s “resurrection” and gifted the tailor, the doctor, the steward, and the merchant with robes of honor. This story, passed down through the ages in the Alif Laila collection, reminds us that things are rarely as they seem and that honesty, eventually, clears the path to justice.
