The Crow and the Snake, Panchatantra Story with Moral

The Crow and The Snake

The Crow and The Snake: Deep in the forest, a crow found the perfect branch. It was leafy and ideal for building her nest. She laid her eggs and eagerly waited to meet her babies. But there was a major problem. A massive, hungry snake lived in a dark hole right at the roots of her tree.

The Crow and The Snake

Every single time the crow laid a clutch of eggs, the snake quietly slithered up the trunk. It ate them and then slipped right back down into its hole. The poor crow was absolutely devastated. She was no match for the snake physically and felt completely helpless to protect her family.

She felt desperate. She flew over to visit her friend, the fox. He was known for being the sharpest animal in the woods. The fox listened to her heartbreak, thought for a moment, and then whispered a brilliant, sneaky plan into her ear.

The very next morning, the crow flew out of the forest and straight over the walls of the king’s palace. She saw the princess taking a morning dip in the garden fountain. The princess had left her dazzling, thick gold necklace resting on the stone edge. In a flash, the crow swooped down, snatched the heavy jewelry in her beak, and took off.

The royal guards started shouting and immediately chased the bird out of the palace gates. The crow flew straight back to her tree, making sure the guards were right on her tail. Once they were close enough to see her, she deliberately dropped the shiny necklace right down into the snake’s hole.

When the guards arrived and started digging around for the royal jewelry, they came face-to-face with the snake. Not wanting to take any chances, they quickly killed it, grabbed the necklace, and marched back to the palace.

Just like that, the crow’s biggest threat was gone without her ever having to fight a battle she couldn’t win. She finally got to raise her babies in peace, safe and sound in the branches above.

The Crow and The Snake: The Takeaway

  • Brains beat brawn: When you’re facing a problem bigger, stronger, or louder than you, use clever planning. It is usually more effective than forcing a fight.
