Sindbad The 1st Voyage

Sindbad The 1st Voyage
Experience the thrilling adventure of Sindbad The 1st Voyage. A tale of survival, magic islands, and destiny from the legendary Alif Laila collection.

In the heart of ancient Baghdad, where the golden domes shimmered under the desert sun, there lived a humble porter named Sindbad. One sweltering afternoon, exhausted by the heavy loads he carried, the porter rested near the gates of a grand mansion. As he lamented his hard life, comparing it to the luxury of the rich, he was summoned inside by a servant. There, he met the master of the house—a wealthy, elderly man also named Sindbad, known to the world as Sindbad the Sailor. To explain how he acquired his immense fortune, the sailor began to recount his first legendary journey, a story that resonates with the same wonder as the framing tale of Shahryar and Scheherazade.

The Call of the Sea

Sindbad the Sailor inherited a great deal of wealth from his father, but like many young men, he spent it recklessly on fine clothes and lavish parties. Realizing his gold was vanishing like sand in an hourglass, he decided to turn his life around. He sold his remaining possessions, purchased valuable trade goods, and set sail from Basra with a group of experienced merchants.

As they traveled from island to island, the beauty of the sea reminded Sindbad of the infinite mysteries of the world, much like the strange twists found in The Tale of King Yunan. For days, the voyage was peaceful, the winds were fair, and the profit was promising. However, destiny had a peculiar plan for the young merchant.

The Island That Breathed

One afternoon, the crew spotted a beautiful, lush island rising from the turquoise waters. It was covered in greenery and trees, though no birds sang in its branches. Eager for a break from the ship, the captain anchored nearby, and the merchants went ashore to cook, wash, and rest. Sindbad was among them, enjoying the solid ground beneath his feet.

Suddenly, the ground began to tremble. A violent shudder went through the earth, and the captain, watching from the deck, screamed in terror, “Fly for your lives! This is no island! It is a colossal whale that has slept on the surface since time immemorial!” Just as the fires the merchants had lit began to burn the creature’s skin, the whale dived deep into the ocean depths.

Panic ensued. Most managed to scramble back to the ship, but many were swept away by the massive whirlpool created by the whale’s descent. Sindbad, left behind in the chaos, found himself clinging to a large wooden trough they had used for washing. He watched in despair as his ship, fearing further disaster, sailed away into the horizon. He was now alone at the mercy of the vast, indifferent ocean—a situation of dire fate similar to the protagonist in The Fisherman and the Genie.

The Kingdom of King Mihrage

For a day and a night, Sindbad drifted, his strength fading. Just as he prepared to meet his end, the waves pushed him toward a high-shored island. With his last bit of energy, he climbed the cliffs and collapsed in a lush meadow. When he awoke, he discovered a beautiful kingdom ruled by King Mihrage.

While exploring, he encountered the King’s grooms, who were tending to royal mares. They were astonished by his story and brought him to the palace. King Mihrage, impressed by Sindbad’s resilience and polite manner, made him the overseer of the maritime port. Though Sindbad was treated with great honor, his heart yearned for Baghdad. During his stay, he heard many travelers speak of wonders that sounded as fantastical as The Enchanted Horse, yet he never found a ship headed for home.

An Unexpected Reunion

One day, a large merchant ship docked at the port. As the cargo was being unloaded, Sindbad noticed several bales of cloth that bore his own name. He approached the captain, who initially didn’t recognize him, believing Sindbad had drowned when the whale submerged.

After a long and emotional explanation, Sindbad proved his identity by describing the exact contents of the crates. Overjoyed, the captain returned his goods, which had now tripled in value. Sindbad presented some of the most precious items to King Mihrage as a parting gift. The King, in return, gave him treasures of even greater value.

Sindbad returned to Baghdad a wealthy man, far richer than when he had left. He bought land, built a magnificent house, and dedicated himself to a life of charity and enjoyment. Having finished the tale of his first adventure, the sailor gave the porter a hundred gold pieces and invited him back the next day to hear the even more incredible story of Sindbad The 2nd Voyage.
