बहुत समय पहले की बात है। एक छोटे से गांव में एक गरीब लेकिन ईमानदार लकड़हारा रहता था। उसकी रोजी-रोटी जंगल से लकड़ियां काटकर उन्हें बाजार में बेचने पर निर्भर थी। साधनों की कमी थी, लेकिन उसके मन में कभी भी लालच या धोखा देने का विचार नहीं आया।

देवता बोले,

लकड़हारे ने तुरंत सिर झुका कर कहा,
“नहीं महाराज, मेरा कुल्हाड़ा लोहे का था।”
देवता ने फिर नदी में गोता लगाया और चांदी का कुल्हाड़ा निकाला। फिर वही सवाल किया और फिर लकड़हारे ने सच्चाई से मना कर दिया।
आखिरकार देवता ने लोहे का पुराना कुल्हाड़ा निकाला। इस बार लकड़हारे का चेहरा खिल उठा। वह बोला,
“हाँ, यही मेरा कुल्हाड़ा है!”

देवता उसकी ईमानदारी से बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने उसे सोने, चांदी और उसके अपने लोहे के कुल्हाड़े तीनों दे दिए। लकड़हारा खुशी से फूला नहीं समाया। वह अपने गाँव लौटा और ईमानदारी तथा मेहनत से अपनी जिंदगी बेहतर बनायी।
उसकी कहानी पूरे गांव में फैल गई। लोग उसकी ईमानदारी की मिसाल देने लगे और बच्चों को सिखाया जाने लगा कि मेहनत और सच्चाई का फल हमेशा मीठा होता है।
